Report: Stanford hires Johnny Dawkins

STANFORD, Calif., April 26 (UPI) -- Duke University associate coach Johnny Dawkins will be the new head man at Stanford University.

ESPN.com reported being told by multiple sources Saturday that Dawkins already has accepted the job at Pacific 10 school after 11 seasons working for Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

He succeeds Trent Johnson, who left to fill a similar vacancy at LSU April 10.

Dawkins inherits a squad that loses twin 7-foot juniors Brook and Robin Lopez, who will enter the NBA draft in June.

The Washington, D.C., native played his college career at the ACC school and is the Blue Devils' all-time leading scorer.

He was team captain in his senior season, when the Durham, N.C., school played an NCAA record 40 games -- 37 in the regular season -- and put together a school record 21-game winning streak.

That squad won the ACC regular season crown, the ACC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
