Masters champ struggles at Nelson

IRVING, Texas, April 24 (UPI) -- Eric Axley, playing in the state where he won his only PGA Tour event, shared the lead Thursday after one round of the Byron Nelson Championship.

Axley, Mathew Goggin and Ryan Moore all shot a 3-under 67 over the renovated TPC-Four Seasons course.

Newly crowned Masters champion Trevor Immelman, meanwhile, struggled to an 8-over 78.

"I just think I've just run out of gas," Immelman said. "I've got to figure out a way to balance it all so that I can feel like I get to tournaments feeling fresh."

The course has given up some of the lowest scores on the circuit each year, but only 24 out of 156 players could break par.

"It's pretty brutal," Goggin said. "When the guys come to a new venue, I guess, there's always a bit of a feeling-out period."

Axley is trying to add this title to the Texas Open crown he won two years ago in San Antonio.

Among those at 2-under were Ian Poulter, Adam Scott and former PGA Championship winner Shaun Micheel.

Johnson Wagner, who won in Houston one week prior to the Masters, was part of a large group at 1-under.
