Arrests continue in Montreal hockey riot

MONTREAL, April 24 (UPI) -- Angry Montreal citizens are helping police make more arrests following Monday night's riot after the Canadiens' quarterfinal NHL playoff victory, police said.

An eight-square-block area of downtown turned violent after Montreal downed Boston to advance in the playoffs, with 16 police cars destroyed or damaged and stores vandalized.

Police made 16 arrests that night and police Sgt. Ian Lafreniere told The Gazette citizens outraged by the behavior had submitted almost 50 digital photos and videos in hopes of more arrests.

"It is not the image of Montreal people want, so they have been sending us images of what happened that night," he said. "And it is working -- we made seven arrests and more are expected."

He said investigators are also looking into a case in which a man apparently posted a video of himself taking part in the vandalism on the Internet YouTube site.

The newspaper said the Canadiens planned to appeal to fans for calm as they open their series Thursday night against the Philadelphia Flyers.
