PITTSBURGH, April 23 (UPI) -- Jose Bautista singled in the go-ahead score as part of a three-run eighth Wednesday, pushing Pittsburgh to a 7-4 victory over St. Louis.
The Cardinals produced four runs in the opening inning, but the Pirates battled back to tie the game in the fifth.
Ryan Doumit opened the eighth with a single off reliever Anthony Reyes (1-1). He moved to second on a groundout and scored two batters later on Bautista's base hit. A two-out single by Doug Mientkiewicz accounted for two insurance runs.
Jason Bay hit a two-run homer in the fifth to tie the contest and the Pirates won their second straight after losing six in a row.
After struggling in the first inning, Pittsburgh starter Ian Snell settled down to work six frames. The win went to Damaso Marte (1-0), who threw two scoreless innings of relief, and Matt Capps picked up his sixth save.
