MONTE CARLO, Monaco, April 22 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Novak Djokovic, looking for his second Masters Series title this year, picked up a second-round win Tuesday at the Masters Series event in Monaco.
Djokovic, who won the Masters Series stop in Indian Wells, Calif., in March, had little trouble in topping Ivan Ljubicic, 6-3, 6-3, and advancing to the third round of the clay-court $3.57 million tournament. He next goes against 14th-seeded Andy Murray, who was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Filippo Volandri in his second-round match.
Most of Tuesday's play concerned wrapping up the first round. Three other seeded players advanced with No. 11 Juan Monaco beating Lee Hyung-taik, 6-0, 7-5; 12th-seeded Tommy Robredo stopping Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 7-5; and No. 15 Ivo Karlovic who won when Sebastein Grosjean retired with Korlovic ahead, 4-6, 6-4, 4-1.
A total of 14 second-round matches are scheduled Wednesday, including the first appearances in the tournament by three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal and world No. 1 Roger Federer, who dropped the last two Monte Carlo finals to Nadal.
The 2008 Masters Series Monte Carlo champion will earn $570,000.
