CHARLESTON, S.C., April 17 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Maria Sharapova won Thursday to set up an anticipated quarterfinal match with Venus Williams at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C.
Sharapova disposed of Tatiana Perebiynis 7-5, 6-2. Williams was a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Katarina Srebotnik.
Sharapova improved her match record this season to 24-1, having won three of the four events she has entered. Williams has a 4-2 lifetime record against Sharapova.
Defending champion Jelena Jankovic also advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Anastasia Rodionova.
In other matches Thursday, Elena Dementieva defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 7-5, and Vera Zvonareva eliminated Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Patty Schnyder also advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Agnieszka Radwanska.
