Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
MONTREAL, April 17 (UPI) -- The sluggish Boston Bruins erupted for four goals in the third period Thursday and beat Montreal 5-1 in game 5 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal.
It was a win that Boston needed to avoid elimination.
With the score tied 1-1 through two periods, Glen Metropolit scored the go-ahead goal at 3:31 of the third. Boston also got goals from Zdeno Chara (power play), Marco Sturm (short-handed) and Vladimir Sobotka (unassisted).
David Krejci and Andrew Ference both had two assists while goalie Tim Thomas made 31 saves on 32 shots to help the Bruins cut their series deficit to 3-2.
They had scored a total of four goals in the previous four games and were shut out 1-0 at home Tuesday.
Montreal's lone goal was scored by Alexei Kovalev at 9:47 of the first period.
Carey Price was beaten five times on 24 shots for the Canadiens, who travel to Boston for Game 6 Saturday.
