
NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) -- Marc Staal scored the go-ahead goal with 3:13 left Wednesday and the New York Rangers took command of their playoff series by downing New Jersey 5-3.
New York leads the best-of-seven conference quarterfinal series 3-1. New Jersey will try to stay alive on its home ice in Game 5 Friday
Scott Gomez scored twice for the Rangers, and Chris Drury and Martin Straka produced a goal each. Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves.
Martin Brodeur faced 38 shots for the Devils, who got two goals from Patrik Elias.
Mike Mottau lifted New Jersey into a 3-3 tie at 4:37 of the third period and overtime was looming when Staal blasted a shot through traffic and past Brodeur for the first playoff goal of his career. Gomez scored into an empty net with 13 seconds to play.
