Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

VALENCIA, Spain, April 15 (UPI) -- Top-seeded David Ferrer defeated fellow Spaniard Ivan Navarro in Spain's Valencia Open Tuesday, advancing to the second round.
Ferrer, who reached the tournament final in 2005, scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Navarro and will next go against Pablo Anjujar, also from Spain.
Others advancing included two-time defending champion NIcolas Almagro and Tommy Robredo, both Spaniards, and Russian Marat Safin.
Almagro, the fifth seed, won his 11th straight match at the event, topping qualifier Miguel Angel Lopez Jaen, 7-5, 6-3.
Robredo, seeded No. 3, beat Albert Montanes, 6-3, 7-5.
Safin, once the world's top-ranked player, beat another former No. 1, Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
