Monfils, Zverev win matches in Spain

VALENCIA, Spain, April 14 (UPI) -- Frenchman Gael Monfils and Germany's Mischa Zverev were among first-round winners Monday in the Valencia Open in Spain.

Monfils advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez.

Zverev outdueled Peru's Luis Horna 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.

Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez moved into the next round when his opponent, Steve Darcis of Belgium, quit because of a wrist injury

David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Juan Carlos Ferrero, all of Spain, and Juan Monaco of Argentina, are all highly seeded players awaiting their first-round matches.

First-prize is worth $93,000.
