Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
NEW YORK, April 13 (UPI) -- Bryant Gumbel is leaving the NFL Network after two seasons of play-by-play duty on the U.S. TV operation.
Gumbel resigned this weekend after numerous criticisms about on-air mistakes and his low-key play-by-play style.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me," he said in a news release. "But we've agreed that we'd all be better served going in different directions."
The network started an immediate search for a second person to join analyst Cris Collinsworth.
The NFL Network airs a package of Thursday and Saturday night games during the league's regular season and specific contests in the pre-season.
Gumbel -- who anchors "Real Sports" for the HBO cable network and retired several years ago from the anchor chair at NBC's "Today" show -- did not say anything about his future plans.
