VALENCIA, Spain, April 13 (UPI) -- A virus has forced Andy Murray to withdraw the Valencia Open men's tennis tournament, which begins Monday in Spain.
The Scot has sunk to No. 22 in the latest world rankings and this move could help him freshen up in time to make a good showing at the season's second grand slam event, the French Open, in late May.
"I knew my (ranking) was going to go up and down a bit," Murray told The Daily Telegraph in a recent interview. "I obviously would have liked to have done better here and at Indian Wells, but I didn't. I lost a couple of tight matches."
Murray has won two finals this season -- 6-4 4-6 6-2 against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka at the Qatar Open in Doha in January and 6-3 6-4 over Croatia's Mario Ancic at the Open 13 tournament in Marseilles, France, in February.
He had not been out of the top 20 since August 2006.
