LOS ANGELES, April 12 (UPI) -- Kobe Bryant helped Los Angeles build a big first-half lead Friday and the Lakers held on to take the Pacific Division title with a 107-104 win over New Orleans.

The result not only clinched the Lakers' first division crown in four years, it further scrambled the wild Western Conference championship chase.

New Orleans saw its lead in the conference dwindle to a half game over the Lakers and to one game over both Houston and San Antonio. The Rockets and Spurs won earlier Friday.

Los Angeles owned a 65-45 halftime lead, but the Hornets closed within two with four minutes left in the fourth period.

The Lakers then ran off six straight points, a spurt that included a three-point shot by Derek Fisher, to stifle the New Orleans comeback bid. Los Angeles maintained at least a six-point lead down the stretch until Jannero Pargo hit a three-pointer for the Hornets with two seconds remaining.

Bryant scored 28 points and Pau Gasol added 25 for the Lakers.

New Orleans was led by Peja Stojakovic with 24.
