PHOENIX, April 12 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis is back home recovering after surgery for thyroid cancer.

He divulged the illness March 27.

The Thursday procedure was two days after he pitched the Diamondbacks to a 10-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"He couldn't wait to get out of the hospital," Dr. Bob Evani told The Arizona Republic. "There were no real surprises during the (four-hour) operation. It was pretty straight forward. The only complaints he had was a mild sore throat, which is expected."

The 32-year-old left-hander likely will be sidelined 4-6 weeks.

He will have to live without the thyroid and take hormones every day for the rest of his life.

He also will undergo a scan to determine how many, if any, cancer cells remain in his body after the surgery.
