Rose, Immelman share Masters lead

AUGUSTA, Ga., April 10 (UPI) -- Justin Rose and Trevor Immelman led a charge of players seeking a major championship breakthrough Thursday and shared the lead after one round of the Masters.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, had only one bright moment and found himself tied for 19th place, four strokes behind the early leaders.

Rose and Immelman both fired a 4-under 68 at the Augusta National Golf Club, putting them one shot in front of Brian Bateman, Brandt Snedeker and Lee Westwood.

At 2-under 70 were Ian Poulter, Robert Karlsson, Stephen Ames, Jim Furyk and defending champion Zach Johnson.

Only two of the top 10 players on the leaderboard -- Furyk and Johnson -- have ever won a major title. But among the leaders are some of the game's bright young stars who are hoping to overcome the dominance of Woods in the big events.

Poulter's round was highlighted by an ace at the par-3 16th.

Among those at 1-under 71 were two-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson and two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen.

Woods was at 72, as was 50-year-old Sandy Lyle. Woods did not make a birdie, but he did chip in for an eagle at the par-5 15th.

"I just couldn't get anything going," Woods said. "I didn't make any putts."
