Lakers' Bynum not cleared to play

LOS ANGELES, April 10 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Lakers announced Thursday that center Andrew Bynum has not been cleared to play, almost four months after suffering a dislocated left kneecap.

Bynum suffered the injury Jan. 13 while attempting to rebound a missed shot in the Lakers' 100-99 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies.

He underwent an examination Wednesday with Dr. David Altchek, a knee specialist in New York.

"This should not be seen as a setback in any way," Altchek said on the team's Web site Thursday. "Andrew will continue with his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers' training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status."

Before Bynum was injured, he averaged 13.1 points and 10.2 rebounds in 35 games and was the Lakers' most improved player this season.
