NBA: New Orleans 108, Golden State 96

NEW ORLEANS, April 6 (UPI) -- Potential NBA MVP Chris Paul recorded a triple-double Sunday, boosting New Orleans past Golden State108-96.

The fourth-year guard from Wake Forest finished with 16 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. His effort helped New Orleans equal a franchise record with its 54th win this season.

With the contest knotted at 90 with 8:06 remaining, New Orleans closed it by scoring 18 of the final 24 points.

The winners trailed 31-22 after the first quarter but a huge second period led to a 59-51 halftime bulge.

David West and Peja Stojakovic scored 25 points apiece, Jeremy Pargo scored 15 with seven assists, and Tyson Chandler added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who retained at least a 1 1/2-game advantage over San Antonio atop the Western Conference.

Monta Ellis led Golden State with 35 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors also got 17 points each from Baron Davis and Andris Biedrins. Al Harrington added 16 points with eight rebounds.
