SAHKIR, Bahrain, April 5 (UPI) -- Robert Kubica captured the pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix during Saturday's qualifying in Sahkir.

He drove his No. 4 BMW Sauber in 1 minute, 33.096 seconds around the 3.363-mile Bahrain International Circuit.

It is the first pole of Kubica's Formula One career and the first for the BMW Sauber team in its 15-year history.

"I missed the chance to take pole position in Australia (the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne March 16), but this time it worked out well," Kubica said.

He is joined by defending champion Felipe Massa on the front row for Sunday's race.

Massa, who captured the pole last year, finished the qualifying session in second place in his Ferrari.

F1 points leader Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen make up Row 2.

Hamilton escaped injury Friday when he crashed his McLaren during a practice run.
