CARSON, Calif., April 4 (UPI) -- David Beckham scored his first MLS goal Thursday and spoiled San Jose's return to the league by leading Los Angeles to a 2-0 victory over the Earthquakes.

Beckham, who was injured for most of his inaugural season with the Galaxy last year, scored in the ninth minute and Landon Donovan added a tally in the 37th.

Steve Cronin had to make just two saves to record the shutout.

The previous San Jose franchise moved to Houston prior to the 2006 season and went on to capture the last two league championships. A new club was built from scratch for the 2008 campaign.
