Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

ST. LOUIS, April 3 (UPI) -- Ryan Ludwick had three hits with a double, triple and three RBI Wednesday in carrying St. Louis to an 8-3 win over Colorado.
The Cardinals put the game away with a four-run eighth inning. Todd Wellemeyer (1-0) picked up the win by giving up a run on four hits in five innings.
Albert Pujols had two hits and three walks, and Rick Ankiel had a solo homer among his three hits.
Colorado was clinging to a one-run lead in the eighth before roughing up Luis Vizcaino, who allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while retiring only one batter.
Rico Washington and Ludwick both had run-scoring doubles in the inning.
The loss went to Aaron Cook, who gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings.
