OAKLAND, Calif., April 2 (UPI) -- David Ortiz belted a two-run homer and Jason Varitek hit a solo shot Wednesday, powering a 5-0 Boston Red Sox win over the Oakland Athletics.

The game completed a season-opening intercontinental four-game series in which the teams split a pair of games in Tokyo before returning to the states, where the Sox took two.

Boston left-hander John Lester (1-1) scattered three hits over 6 2/3 innings for the win.

Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis each added an RBI for the Red Sox.

The A's totaled four hits, including a double by Daric Barton. Alan Embree (0-1), a former Boston pitcher, was the loser, giving up a pair of runs in 1 1/3 innings.
