ATLANTA, April 2 (UPI) -- A two-run homer by Mark Teixeira ignited a seven-run eighth inning Wednesday that boosted Atlanta past Pittsburgh 10-2.
The Braves won their first game of the season after opening with two losses.
After suffering two dramatic setbacks, Atlanta removed all doubt in this one by sending 10 batters to the plate in its final at-bat.
Pittsburgh reliever Tyler Yates walked Chipper Jones to start the inning and was replaced by Damaso Marte. Teixeira promptly greeted Marte by smashing a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center.
That opened the floodgates, with the outburst also featuring a three-run blast from Unel Escobar.
Jair Jurrjens (1-0) picked up his first National League win after being traded from Detroit. Jurrjens allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings.
Tom Gorzelanny (0-1) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings.
