STILLWATER, Okla., April 1 (UPI) -- Oklahoma State men's basketball coach Sean Sutton resigned Tuesday, ending a 17-season affiliation with the Cowboys' program.

Sutton met with Oklahoma State Vice President of Athletics Mike Holder and "mutually agreed on a new direction for the OSU program," the Oklahoma State Athletic Department said in a release.

"After discussions with Sean, and after examining the status of our program, Sean and I both concluded that it is in the best interest of both the OSU men's basketball program and Sean to go a different direction at this time," Holder said.

Sutton played two seasons for the Cowboys while his father, Eddie Sutton, was the head State coach and was an assistant for 10 seasons. In 2003-04 Oklahoma State made him "head coach designate," assuring Sean Sutton the head coaching job when he father stepped down.

That happened late in the 2005-06 season when Sean Sutton coached the team to a 5-6 record. The Cowboys were 22-13 last year and 17-16 in 2007-08.

The Suttons -- either Eddie or Sean -- have coached the Cowboys every season since 1990-91. Another son, Scott, has coached at Oral Roberts for nine seasons.
