Torre took over the West Coast National League team after 12 years with the New York Yankees in which the 67-year-old guided the Bronx Bombers to four World Series championships, six American League pennants and 10 AL East titles.

Barry Zito (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings for the Giants. Aaron Rowand, who signed a five-year contract with the Giants this past winter, went 2-for-3.

The Giants started a season without Barry Bonds for the first time since 1992. The team cut baseball's all-time home run king and seven-time NL MVP during the winter.
