Arkansas-Pine Bluff hires George Ivory

PINE BLUFF, Ark., March 27 (UPI) -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff Thursday named assistant George Ivory its next men's basketball coach.

Ivory -- a 1988 graduate of Mississippi Valley State and a former player of the year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference -- succeeds Van Holt, who resigned in March after six seasons during which his teams were 50-124.

This will be Ivory's first head coaching job following stints as an assistant an assistant at Jackson State and Grambling.

"I'm excited about this opportunity and I look forward to getting started working toward winning championships at UAPB," he said in a statement.

Ivory inherits a program that went 13-18 (8-10 SWAC) this season, which was Holt's best record at the SWAC school.

"We were looking for someone with knowledge of the Southwestern Athletic Conference," said UAPB Athletic Director Skip Perkins. "Coach Ivory has been in this league his entire adult life and he knows exactly what it takes to play, coach, recruit and win in the SWAC."
