PHOENIX, March 26 (UPI) -- The Phoenix Coyotes needed Martin Hanzal's goal 3:23 into overtime Tuesday to hold off the San Jose Sharks 5-4 win over the San Jose Sharks.
Hanzal's seventh goal this season came on a wrist shot from the right side over Brian Boucher's left shoulder. The victory snapped the Coyotes' five-game winless streak and kept their playoff hopes alive.
Derek Morris, Enver Lisin, Steve Reinprecht and Shane Doan also scored for Phoenix, which trails Colorado by six points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves in the win.
Their efforts negated Joe Thornton's third career hat trick of his career. Marc-Edouard Vlasic accounted for San Jose's other goal.
San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was pulled after giving up four goals on 26 shots. Boucher stopped nine shots in relief.
The Sharks had a three-game win streak halted but earned at least one point for the 16th consecutive game.
