Illinois athletic director gets new deal

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., March 26 (UPI) -- The University of Illinois Wednesday gave Athletic Director Ron Guenther a two-year contract extension.

The deal was approved by the school's Board of Trustees during its meeting in Champaign and runs through Jan. 1, 2011. No dollar figure was disclosed but the Chicago Tribune reported that Guenther will earn $600,000 annually.

"I am very pleased with the extension," Guenther said in a statement. "This is an important time for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. We have many projects to accomplish over the next three years including the Assembly Hall and an Olympic sports training center. I very much enjoy the relationship I have with our coaches and staff, and I look forward to meeting the challenges that face intercollegiate athletics today."

Guenther is the Big Ten Conference's longest tenured AD. Illinois hired him in July 1992.

The Fighting Illini have won six Big Ten titles in separate sports in the last four years.
