SURRY, Va., March 25 (UPI) -- The Virginia trial of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick on state dogfighting charges has been moved to June.
Vick was to go to trial April 2 in Surry, Va., on two felony charges, each of which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The new trial date is June 27.
The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three associates were charged in connection with a dogfighting ring operating at property Vick owned in Virginia.
All four men pleaded guilty to federal charges and Vick began serving his 23-month sentence in November and could be released from federal custody in 2009.
Surry County commonwealth's Attorney Gerald Poindexter requested that Vick's state trial be postponed, the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., reported Tuesday. The report said state trials for the other three defendants would also likely be delayed.
Vick was suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after the quarterback pleaded guilty to federal charges.
