FORT MYERS, Fla., March 25 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Twins have ponied up $47 million to lock up their closer, Joe Nathan, for another four years, the club announced.
The right-hander's deal provides him $11.25 million each year beginning this season, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Tuesday. He was to have earned $6 million this year under his previous contract.
It also includes a $12.5 million team option ($2 million buyout) for 2012, the newspaper said.
"I think it's a good fit," Nathan said. "Dave Pepe, my agent, has always said this organization is right for you ... it seems like you belong here."
While a healthy raise, he still trails Mariano Rivera's record-breaking three-year, $45 million contract.
Nathan had 37 saves last year, with a 4-2 record and 1.88 earned-run average. He has totaled 160 saves since 2004.
