SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 25 (UPI) -- San Francisco Giants center fielder Aaron Rowand left Tuesday's exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs in the third inning after being hit on his foot.
Rowand, who signed a five-year, $60 million contract with the Giants in the off-season, was facing Chicago's Rich Hill when a pitch got away from the left- hander. Rowand went down in obvious pain and was helped to the clubhouse.
The team released an update saying Rowand has a contusion on his lower right leg and is day-to-day.
Rowand is coming off his best big-league season with Philadelphia, in which he hit .309 and set career-highs with 27 home runs, 89 RBI, 189 hits, 105 runs and 45 doubles. He led all National League center fielders with a .995 fielding percentage.
Rowand spent seven years in the majors with the White Sox and Phillies, winning a World Series in 2005 with the Sox. He got his first All-Star selection this past season.
