COL BKB: Xavier 85, Purdue 78

WASHINGTON, March 22 (UPI) -- Drew Lavender scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half Saturday to lead No. 12 Xavier to an 85-78 win over No. 18 Purdue, in the NCAA second round.

Josh Duncan added 16 points for the Musketeers (29-6), who move on to Phoenix, where they will play West Virginia in a West Regional semifinal next Thursday. The Mountaineers beat ninth-ranked Duke, 73-67 Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16.

Stanley Burrell had 11 points for Xavier, which advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004.

E'Twaun Moore scored 15 points for the Boilermakers (25-9), who fell in the second round for the second year in a row. Tarrance Crump had 11 points for Purdue, which was trying to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000.

Xavier beat Georgia in first-round action Thursday.
