Surprises dot NCAA Tournament
TAMPA, March 21 (UPI) -- San Diego and Siena provided the kind of magic the NCAA Tournament is known for Friday, pulling off enormous upsets against highly-seeded foes.
Western Kentucky, meanwhile, produced a thrilling win and No. 1 North Carolina ensured there would be no surprise in its game by easily topping the 100-point mark.
In a wild series of contests in Tampa, Fa., Ty Rogers started things by hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to give Western Kentucky a 101-99 win over Drake. The Hilltoppers entered the tournament as a No. 12 seed.
San Diego then set up a second-round matchup with Western Kentucky by shocking Connecticut in overtime 70-69.
The third game of the day in Tampa also produced a stunning result when Siena, seeded 13th in the Midwest Region, overwhelmed Vanderbilt 83-62. The Saints shot 56 percent from the field.
North Carolina had no trouble protecting its No. 1 seeding, crushing Mount St. Mary's 113-74. The Tar Heels equaled their second-largest point production ever in a tournament game.
Davidson won as a lower seed with an 82-76 decision over Gonzaga while No. 2 seeds Tennessee and Texas advanced. Tennessee struggled before disposing of American 72-57 and Texas coasted past Austin Peay 74-54.
In the second round Saturday, the top attractions will find Kansas meeting UNLV, West Virginia playing Duke and UCLA taking on Texas A&M.
Ogilvy leads World Golf Championship
MIAMI, March 21 (UPI) -- Geoff Ogilvy's 5-under-par 67 Friday gave him a one-stroke lead over Tiger Woods through 36 holes at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship in Miami.
Ogilvy's total after two bogey-free rounds is 12-under 132. It is the second time in his career that Ogilvy had held the lead after two rounds in a PGA Tour event.
"That was about the right score today," Ogilvy said. "I played a lot better yesterday than I did today but I made a lot of putts and got up and down when I needed to. I was always in play and I made some good putts."
Woods (66) is 11-under 133 after ending with a 24-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole.
Ogilvy's fellow Australian Adam Scott (68) fell three shots back after ending the day with bogeys at 17 and 18 for a total of 9-under 135.
Robert Karlsson (70), Jeev Milkha Singh (70) and Anders Hansen (71) share fourth place at 6-under 138.
Fish earns semifinal date with Federer
INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 21 (UPI) -- Mardy Fish reached the semifinals of the Pacific Life Open with a grueling victory Friday and Roger Federer advanced without having to pick up his racket.
Fish defeated David Nalbandian 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4) to earn a spot in the semifinals of this event for the first time. Fish produced 23 aces and survived in a match that took two hours, 45 minutes to complete.
Tommy Haas, meanwhile, had to withdraw from his scheduled quarterfinal match with Federer because of a sinus infection.
"I deeply regret that I have to withdraw," Haas said. "I was playing my best tennis of the season and was looking forward to playing Roger this afternoon."
Federer, the world's No. 1 player, is seeking his fourth victory here in five years.
Saturday's other semifinal will send second-seeded Rafael Nadal against third-seeded Novak Djokovic in a rematch of last year's championship confrontation, which Nadal won.
