
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 15 (UPI) -- Tyler Hansbrough's late jumper Saturday gave top-ranked North Carolina a 68-66 win over Virginia Tech in an ACC semifinal in Charlotte.
The 6-foot-9 All-American drilled a fall-away jumper after corralling a rebound on a missed shot with eight-tenths of a second left.
The shot gave UNC a hard-earned victory.
With the contest tied 38-38, Tech built a 48-42 lead with 15:33 left.
Hansbrough led his team with 26 points and nine rebounds.
Wayne Ellington scored 15 with eight rebounds, and Marcus Ginyard added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Tar Heels (31-2), who won nine in a row.
A.D. Vassallo led Virginia Tech with 17 points and four rebounds.
Malcolm Delaney had 15 points, four rebounds and six assists, and Deron Washington added 14 points for the Hokies (19-13), who hope to get a call Sunday from NCAA Tournament officials after winning five of their last seven games.
