BRISTOL, Conn., March 14 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran quarterback Mark Brunell to be a backup to starter Drew Brees, a report said.
ESPN reported that the 37-year-old Brunell, a free agent, felt positive enough about his visit with the Saints that he decided to work out a deal instead of continuing a tour of other teams.
No terms were disclosed.
Because he lost a similar job in Washington to Todd Collins, his future with the Redskins was bleak.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that he reached an agreement in principle on a two-year deal late Thursday.
In a 15-year NFL career, the last four in Washington, Brunell has thrown 182 touchdown passes with 2,738 completions for 31,826 yards.
He has thrown 106 interceptions and also rushed for more than 2,000 yards while playing for the Packers, Jaguars and Redskins.
He started his career in Green Bay as a backup to Brett Favre.
