Arizona signs WR Fitzgerald to $40M deal

TEMPE, Ariz., March 11 (UPI) -- All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald reported Tuesday he has reached a contract agreement on a four-year, $40 million contract extension with Arizona.

The deal reportedly will ease the salary cap crunch Fitzgerald's previous contract was causing for Arizona. Fitzgerald, 24, had hit performance accelerators in his previous contract that had him slated to be paid more than $30 million over the next two seasons.

There had been speculation that because of the financial obligations to Fitzgerald the Cardinals might consider trading him. According to a release on his Web site, the contract will pay the four-year veteran $30 million guaranteed over the next four seasons, including $15 million guaranteed in 2008.

It also gives the 6-foot-3, 226-pounder a no-trade clause.

Fitzgerald led the NFC in 2007 with 100 receptions and 1,409 receiving yards, and had 10 touchdowns. In four seasons he has 330 catches for 4,554 yards and 34 touchdowns.
