The scintillating match went to a third-set tie-breaker after Venus won the second 6-3 because Serena won just one of 17 points on her second serve and was broken three times.

In the tie-breaker, Venus won the first two points, but Serena won seven of the next nine for the victory.

"'It was probably one of my toughest matches against Venus but at the end of the day we both are not playing our best tennis," Serena said.

The American sisters have combined to win 14 Grand Slam singles titles and are both former world No. 1 stars. It was their first meeting since the 2005 season.

In Sunday's final, Serena faces Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, a 6-3, 6-4 semifinal winner against Zi Yan of China.
