Giants give Tom Coughlin a new deal

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 8 (UPI) -- New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin has agreed to a four-year contract carrying him through the 2011 season.

Terms were not disclosed, but the New York Daily News previously reported it was worth $21 million.

It likely leaves the once-beleaguered Coughlin with a feeling of vindication after he guided the Giants to a 17-14 victory against previously unbeaten New England at Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz., Feb. 5.

In past seasons, he was criticized by a number of players for a brusque and militaristic coaching style.

"Tom Coughlin has done a great job for us and we think this contract recognizes his outstanding achievements here," John Mara, the Giants' president and chief executive officer, said on the team's Web site. "This is a message to him and to our fans that we want him to be our coach for many years to come."

Coughlin also coached the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-2002 and was a Giants assistant from 1988-90.
