PHILADELPHIA, March 6 (UPI) -- Two free throws by Tasheed Carr with five seconds remaining Thursday allowed St. Joseph's to hold on for a 71-66 victory over No. 11 Xavier.
St. Joseph's owned as much as a 15-point lead in the second half, but saw that sliced to three when Drew Lavender hit a three-point shot with seven seconds to play.
Carr's free throws, however, ensured a much-needed victory for the Hawks (18-10, 9-6 Atlantic 10), who were hoping for a high-profile win along with a good showing in the conference tourney to have any chance of reaching the NCAA Tournament.
Pat Calathes scored 17 points for St. Joseph's, Carr had 15 and Rob Ferguson added 13.
Derrick Brown led Xavier with 18 points. Xavier (25-5, 13-2) has already wrapped up the regular-season league championship. The Musketeers had an 11-game winning streak snapped.
