NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 29 (UPI) -- In his first game with his new team, goalie Cristobal Huet recorded his third shutout this season to help Washington beat New Jersey 4-0.

Huet stopped all 18 shots he faced to boost the Capitals to only their second victory against New Jersey in their last 10 meetings.

Washington held a 1-0 advantage through two periods but struck three times in the third.

Four different players -- Mike Green in the second and Victor Kozlov, Alexander Semin and Donald Brashear in the third -- all scored once.

Alexander Ovechkin's assist in the third gave him 83 points this season.

Tom Poti and Niklas Backstrom added two assists for the Capitals, who improved to 30-27-8 (68 points) with the win and pulled within three points of idle Carolina atop the Southeast Division.

Martin Brodeur was beaten four times on 29 shots in a rare loss to Washington.

His career record against the Capitals fell to 32-12-4.
