COL BKB: Stanford 82, Washington 79

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 29 (UPI) -- Two free throws by Mitch Johnson with seven seconds left wrapped up an 82-79 victory for No. 8 Stanford over Washington Thursday.

It was the 15th home win for the Cardinal, the first time in school history Stanford has won that many games on its own floor in a single season.

Stanford (23-4, 12-3 Pac-10) went into the contest trailing No. 4 UCLA by one game in the race for the league title. UCLA maintained the lead in the standings with a 70-49 win over Arizona State Thursday.

An 8-2 run gave Stanford a 66-59 lead with five minutes to go, but the Huskies stayed close and it took Johnson's two free throws at the seven-second mark to give Stanford a six-point cushion.

Ryan Appleby then hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Brook Lopez led Stanford with 21 points and Johnson had 15.

Washington (15-14, 6-10) was paced by Quincy Pondexter with 21.
