Villeneuve searching for sponsor

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Veteran Indy race car driver Jacques Villeneuve is pressing on despite failing his latest attempt to secure a spot on the NASCAR circuit.

He was tabbed by Bill Davis Racing, but the team owner pulled back recently because he could not generate financial backing.

"The sponsorship dollars have just not come," Davis told NASCAR.com recently. "Our sport is expensive. (Villeneuve) and his group are working very hard on sponsorships. I promise you, if (he) called tomorrow and had a sponsor, we'd be all set to go."

Villeneuve could not qualify for last Sunday's Daytona 500 and was involved in a crash in the second Gatorade Duel two days earlier.

Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson will drive Davis Racing's No. 27 Toyota at Sunday's Sprint Cup Auto Club 500 at the California Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
