GLENDALE, Ariz., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Cody McLeod finally ended the shootout in the 12th round Friday, allowing the Colorado Avalanche to halt a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Phoenix.
The game went into overtime only because Derek Morris scored for Phoenix with two seconds remaining in regulation.
Neither side could produce a goal through the first five rounds of the shootout, but Colorado's Tyler Arnason and the Coyotes' Joel Perrault both came through in the sixth. John-Michael Liles of Colorado and Mike York of Phoenix scored in the eighth round.
After McLeod beat Mikael Tellqvist in the 12th round, Jose Theodore was able to stop Keith Yandle to end it.
The Avalanche managed to avoid what would have been their longest losing streak in 10 years. Phoenix lost its second straight after winning three in a row.
