Falcons pick third in draft's first round

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Falcons will select third in April's NFL draft following a coin toss Friday to break a three-team, selection-order tie.

It was already known that the Miami Dolphins (1-15) and St. Louis Rams (3-13), respectively, would have the first two selections in the 2008 NFL draft, but the Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders all tied for the third-worst record last season at 4-12.

When that logjam couldn't be broken by a series of tie-breakers, NFL officials turned to the coin toss.

Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff, calling "tails," won the coin toss giving Atlanta its highest draft choice since 2001.

Tie-breakers between the Raiders and Chiefs -- Kansas City had a better record against common opponents -- gave Oakland the fourth pick in the first round while Kansas City picks fifth.

The teams will rotate draft order in subsequent rounds, with Oakland picking third in the second round and Kansas City getting the No. 3 selection in the third round.

The 2008 NFL draft is scheduled for April 26.
