Larranaga gets 400th career victory

FAIRFAX, Va., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- George Mason University men's basketball Coach Jim Larranaga joined the 400-victory club Wednesday when his Patriots thumped Delaware 70-58.

Before the victory, he already was the school's and Colonial Athletic Association's all-time leader in wins.

Wednesday's victory eased the pain of a last-second 75-73 loss to North Carolina-Wilmington last Saturday. George Mason also avenged a 73-68 overtime loss Jan. 9 at Delaware to retain a share of second place in the CAA standings with Wilmington.

"When we lost on Saturday, it hurt," Larranaga, 58, told The Washington Post. "The way we lost makes it hurt even worse. But I asked (the players) to dedicate themselves to playing better team defense and to try to get back to the kind of defense that is tough to score on consistently. I thought we did that."

It was Larranaga's 203rd victory against 128 losses in his 11th season at George Mason. He also went 170-144 at Bowling Green and 27-26 at American International.
