ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Roger Federer is favored to again win the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award Monday in St. Petersburg, Florida.
If the world's top-ranked men's tennis player wins, it will be a fourth straight time. The annual award is given to the best in all of sports.
"I'm just excited to have so many years left on the tour," Federer, 26, who hails from Basel, Switzerland, told Sydney, Australia's Daily Telegraph recently. "I'm still motivated, still young, the tour seems like it's going in a good direction and that's important to me."
A short list of other realistic contenders includes American Tiger Woods, the world No. 1 in men's golf; U.S. world championship sprinter Tyson Gay; Soccer player Kaka of Brazil, who was his sport's player of the year; American swimmer Michael Phelps; and Finland's Kimi Raikkonen, the world champion in Formula One auto racing.
Other contestants are Swedish heptathlete Carolina Kluft, Australian swimmer Libby Lenton, Brazilian soccer player Marta and Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa.
