COLUMBIA, Mo., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- University of Missouri guard Stefhon Hannah has been kicked off the men's basketball team for a violation of team rules.

The 6-foot, 3-inch senior from Chicago, the Tigers' leading scorer with 14.6 points per game, originally expected to be sidelined through early March by the broken jaw he suffered Jan. 27 in an altercation outside of a Columbia, Mo., nightclub but in a release the school said that his dismissal came after he hadn't met team academic expectations.

"Part of becoming a young man is accepting the consequences of your actions, not compounding them," said Missouri Coach Mike Anderson on the school's Web site. "When we came to Missouri, we promised the parents, our administration and our fans that we would help turn these boys into men by the time they left our program."

Anderson said Hannah has the option of remaining on scholarship to continue working toward his degree.
