Moya advances to second round in Brazil

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Spaniard Carlos Moya and countryman Albert Montanes both advanced Monday in the opening round of the Brasil Open.

Moya bounced back from a second-set loss to defeat Santiago Ventura 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and eighth-seeded Montanes beat Frenchman Nicolas Devilder 6-4, 6-4.

In other opening-round action, Serbian Boris Pashanski defeated Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-4, 6-4; Italian Fabio Fognini beat Czech Jiri Vanek 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3); and Ecuador's Nicholas Lapentti beat Brazilian Thomaz Belluci 6-2, 6-2.

Argentine Guillermo Canas defeated Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in last year's final, but neither is playing in this week's tournament.
