SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Joe Thornton scored a power-play goal 1:49 into overtime Friday, giving San Jose a 2-1 victory over Columbus.

Thornton beat backup goaltender Fredrik Norrena with a slap shot after Dan Fritsche had been sent to the penalty box for hooking.

Norrena was starting his second straight game in place of Pascal Leclaire, who is suffering from a bruised neck.

Evgeni Nabokov made 31 saves for the Sharks, several of the spectacular variety.

Marcel Goc put San Jose in front just 2:34 into the game and Nabokov kept Columbus off the scoreboard until Jason Chimera scored on a tip-in at 7:13 of the third period.

This was the 14th time Columbus had played in San Jose and the Blue Jackets have won just once.
