BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Jerry Pate opened a bid for his second straight Champions Tour victory Friday, taking a share of the lead at the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.

Pate shot a 6-under 66 in the opening round to tie Mark McNulty for the top spot at the Old Course at Broken Sound Club.

Those tied for third place at 67 included Jay Haas, Bobby Wadkins, Tom Purtzer, Keith Fergus, Scott Hoch, Gil Morgan and Phil Blackmar.

Pate captured the most recent Champions Tour event, contested in Hawaii.

"I'm striking the ball well and am confident with my putting," said Pate, whose career highlight on the regular PGA Tour came when he won the U.S. Open 28 years ago.

Ben Crenshaw, Allen Doyle, Tom Kite, Morris Hatalsky, Wayne Levi and current U.S. Senior Open champion Brad Bryant shared 10th place at 68.
