Kent Jones leads at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Kent Jones, whose career-best finish on the PGA Tour has been a tie for sixth, took the first-round lead Thursday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Jones shot a 6-under 66 over the Pebble Beach Links, one of three courses used for this celebrity-laden tournament.

John Mallinger, Roland Thatcher and Brad Adamonis shared second place at 67.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson, who lost in a playoff at the FBR Open in Arizona Sunday, shot a 1-under 71 at the Poppy Hills course. He was 4-over through 10 holes and played the next four in 5-under.

Jones began play at the 10th hole and opened with two straight birdies.

"I'm just satisfied that I played well and putted well," Jones said. "I don't think, especially when everyone is playing different golf courses, being in the lead is very important."

J.B. Holmes, who defeated Mickelson in the playoff last week, was tied for fifth at 68 in a group with Tim Heron and Olin Browne.

Greg Norman, playing his first round on the PGA Tour in 18 months, shot a 76.
